The Massachusetts Department of State Police requires private detectives and watch guards to post a $5,000 surety bond.
Why this bond
By posting a private investigator bond in Massachusetts, the principal (private detective or watch guard) agrees to comply with the provisions of Section 25, Chapter 147 of the General Laws of Massachusetts. Prohibited acts outlined in this section include, but are not limited to:
- entering a subject’s place of employment
- making false statements
- wearing a badge that isn’t regulated by the colonel of police
- carrying weapons without a permit
If a principal violates the bond’s terms, a claim can be made against the bond to provide reparation for damages.

The private detective or watch guard’s county must be listed on the bond form.Massachusetts private detective/watch guard bonds are continuous until canceled. If the bond is to be canceled, the surety must provide notice to the Department of State Police.
